Irrigation Activation in Endodontics: Principles, Methods, and Evidence Introduction The primary objective of root canal treatment is to eliminate microorganisms, disrupt biofilms, and remove tissue remnants and smear layer from the complex root canal system. Mechanical instrumentation alone cannot fully achieve this goal due to anatomical complexities such as isthmuses, lateral canals, apical deltas, and dentinal tubules. Therefore, irrigation plays a pivotal role in cleaning and disinfecting areas inaccessible to instruments. Activation techniques—defined as methods to enhance irrigant dynamics within the root canal—have been developed to increase penetration, refresh irrigant exchange, and overcome apical vapor lock. These approaches rely on mechanical, sonic, ultrasonic, or laser-induced agitation, aiming to improve the antimicrobial and tissue-dissolving efficacy of irrigants. Fundamental Principles of Activation…
